Mersin has a wide potential in Tourism sector since it is located at the intersection of cultures & religions. Archeological excavations have shown that the city was first build 9000 years ago. With 491 ruin sites, city still carries the prints of especially the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire and in Arabic and Ottoman periods.
Mersin has 326km coastline which 128km of it is the natural shores including six blue flamed beaches with its sunny weather more than 300 days a year. Despite the 4.859 bed capacity, 62 tourist agencies, 2 marinas and entertainment services, sector is still expecting investments within the region. Some of the sector’s main subtitles are cultural, archeological, faith, marine, congress, ecological& agro tourism with State Opera & Ballet, International Music Festival, Museums, St. Paul, St. Techla Churches, Cleopatra Gate, Zeus & Tyche Temples, Alahan Monastery, Korikos, Maiden & Silifke Castles, Heaven & Hell Caves, Anemurion Ancient City and many other cultural assets. In recent years, tourism oriented investment projects have increased in Mersin and the number of tourism investment licensed establishments in our province is planned to be reached 39, whereas room capacity to be reached 6.866. By evaluating the existing potential of the tourism sector in our province; for the achievement of the variety of tourism, the focus of the projects are earning the tourism and cultural values which have not been revealed to the tourism sector, introduction and development of them. In this context, the studies of the declared 8 Tourism Center and Area inside our province are carried out integrally. The mainly existing projects are Tarsus-Kazanlı Tourism Project, Karboğazı Winter Sports Tourism Center Project and Mersin-Antalya highway project.
